Karimnagar
By Our Staff Reporter
KARIMNAGAR, JAN. 28. The Communist Party of India district unit has said the State Government is betraying the backward Telangana region in sanction of compensation to farmers who have lost their crops in the recent hailstorm in some districts. Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, the CPI naitonal council member and district secretary, Chada Venkat Reddy, alleged that the State Government had released compensation to Andhra region farmers, who had lost their crops due to the cyclone on a war-footing, but neglected Telangana farmers. Alleging discrimination towards Telangana farmers in release of compensation, he said the Government had released Rs 1,000 for each coconut tree lost in the cyclone while only Rs 16 for each lemon and Rs 18 for each mango tree was given in the drought-prone Telangana region. In Karimnagar district, the hailstorm had caused destruction in 21 mandals and chilli, cotton, maize, mango and lemon crops were damaged on over 12,000 acres, he said and demanded that the Government pay a compensation of Rs 5,000 per acre for maize and Rs 7,500 for chilli. He asked the Minister for Revenue, P Ashok Gajapathi Raju, to disclose the expenditure incurred on his helicopter travel to Karimnagar and Adilabad districts and the compensation provided to hailstorm-affected farmers. He alleged that the Government, which was spending a huge amount on publicity, was shedding crocodile tears for farmers. The CPI district executive committee member, P Venkat Reddy, was also present.
