Police goes `Smart Cop'

By Our Staff Correspondent

JAIPUR, JAN. 28. The "Smart Cop'' telecommunication system introduced for the Rajasthan police here on Tuesday has added another landmark to the State Government's drive for e-governance. The new Internet-based system has been evolved as part of the police modernisation programme.

Inaugurating the new system at the Police headquarters here, the Director-General of Police, V.K. Hansuka, said it would facilitate exchange of information on law and order, crime and administrative and secret matters between the Superintendents of Police and police headquarters at high speed.

A separate server for the new system has been installed at Police Headquarters, where the messages cannot be intercepted due to prevention of unauthorised access. Unlike the high frequency wireless sets used earlier, the new system will ensure transmission of fingerprints, photographs of proclaimed offenders, missing persons and data tables.

The State Government's agency for computer administration, Rajcomp, has created the software for "Smart Cop''. Mr. Hansuka said the Police Department has spent Rs. 54 lakhs on purchasing computers, devising of software and training the police personnel.

The new system will connect all districts, where Rs. 4 lakhs would be spent on telephone connections and Rs. 3 lakhs on the server lease licence fee every year. Besides, new computers, printers and scanners have been supplied to the offices of all SPs. Mr. Hansuka said Rs. 10 lakhs would be saved by discontinuing the use of old teleprinters in 13 districts.

The inaugural use of the new system was in the shape of the DGP's standing orders and guidelines sent to all SPs through the Internet. A detailed circular about the system was also sent by the Additional Director-General of Police, M.K. Devrajan.

The Secretary, Information Technology, Shrimat Pandey, speaking on the occasion, said this was a giant leap in e-governance and the State Government would send more projects in the sector to the Centre for its approval.
