VISAKHAPATNAM, JAN. 28. Prominent senior citizens of the city unanimously opposed the proposal of constructing a commercial complex at the 23-acre old Central Prison site in the heart of the city during an interactive session on the draft master plan of Visakhapatnam Metropolitan Region prepared by Visakhapatnam Urban Development Authority (VUDA). At the meeting, chaired by the VUDA vice-chairman, D. Sreenivasulu, the participants suggested the development of the vacant land into a convention centre that would preserve and promote local culture and traditions. The centre could be placed amidst a park, they felt. Prominent among the participants were Bar Council of India Chairman, D.V. Subba Rao, the retired IES officer, C.S. Rao, the retired Regional PF Commissioner, S.V.S.S. Ramachandra Raju, and the philanthropist M. Chalamaiah.felt. The Vice-Chairman told the participants that VUDA had proposed to develop old structures as public utility places without disturbing their sanctity.
