HC hears arguments in writ plea against Naidu

By Our Legal Correspondent

HYDERABAD, JAN. 28. A Division Bench of the High Court comprising the Chief Justice, Devinder Gupta, and the Judge, G. Rohini, on Wednesday heard the arguments in the writ petition filed seeking action against the Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu.

The petition was filed by K. Lakshminarayana and K.R. Amose, Congress leaders. Counsel for the petitioner, S. Ramachandra Rao, explained the circumstances in which the petitioners were approaching the court. During the arguments, the court questioned the advocate how such a writ petition was filed just before the elections like the one filed in 1999. Counsel explained that the present case was filed in October in the Supreme Court and they were now approaching the court as per the proceedings of the apex court. Counsel alleged that every major construction activity was handed over to the L & T which, it was argued, enriched the Chief Minister. The crux of the arguments of Mr. Ramachandra Rao was that Mr. Chandrababu Naidu said that his income was meagre and declared that he was not involved in any business. The petitioners contended that the assets worth Rs. 19 crores presently with the Chief Minister as declared by him proved that there was no link between the source of income and the declared assets. The argument will continue on Thursday.

Azhar plea

A Division Bench of the High Court comprising Justice Bilal Nazki and Justice Tamada Gopalakrishna on Wednesday declared that the appeal filed by Md. Azaruddin, former captain of the Indian cricket team against dismissal of the suit filed by him challenging the penal action taken by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) would be taken up for hearing on March 9.

It may be recalled that after the board's action against him, the former Indian skipper filed civil suit in the city civil court which was dismissed. The present appeal was filed against that order of the civil court. The bench directed the petitioner's counsel to serve notices upon Madhavan, former director of the CBI and the enquiry officer. The former president of the BCCI, Muthaiah, is also to receive notice from the cricketer.
