COMED-K (Consortium of Medical, Engineering, and Dental Colleges of Karnataka) has begun admissions to postgraduate medical and dental courses based on the merit quota for 2004-05. Thirteen colleges will admit students who pass the entrance tests to be held by the consortium on February 14 in Bangalore. Till now, the Department of Medical Education had been conducting the entrance tests and organising counselling and admissions. Last year, the Government and the college managements shared the PG medical seats 50:50. Later, the private college managements managed to get 70 per cent share with only 30 per cent left for "merit students".
CHRIST COLLEGE's Department of Tourism Administration, plans a two-day fest on January 30 and 31 to as part of the Department's Annual Day "Exodus 2004". As part of this fest, there will be inter-collegiate all-India level competitions, a corporate quiz on tourism, travel, and hospitality called "Travelitez" and cultural programmes. The competitions are open to undergraduate and postgraduate students doing courses in travel, tourism, and hotel management. The department said the quiz, first conducted during Exodus 2002, was entered in the Limca Book of Records "as the first-ever Hospitality Quiz conducted in India" for professionals from that industry. Giri `Pickbrain' Balasubramaniam, quizmaster last year, will do the honours this year too. For more details, call 25526164.
THE INSTITUTE of Finance and International Management, one of the city's leading B-schools, had organised a workshop on "Strategies for Competitive Advantage", a topic much in the mind of corporate sector where students will seek placements soon. The speakers included N. Krishna Kumar, Chief Executive Officer, Mindtree Consulting, Ravi Naware of ITC Foods, Bijour Kurien of Titan Industries, and Ranu Gupta of Metlife India Insurance. The topics dealt with included generic and functional strategies, cost advantage of outsourcing, globalisation, strategic alliances, joint ventures, takeovers, mergers and acquisitions and corporate restructuring.
