HYDERABAD, JAN. 28. A special `sand committee' that was formed some time ago by the Ranga Reddy Zilla Parishad, comprising officials and other Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituency (ZPTC) members, has expressed the near-unanimous opinion that certain senior officials had, over a period of time, over-ruled the authority of the ZP Chairman, K. Gnaneshwar. The Sand Committee tabled its report at the general body meeting held on Wednesday at the Ranga Reddy district Zilla Parishad. The Committee Chairman and Hayatnagar ZPTC member, S. Raji Reddy (Telugu Desam), said several officials had used their powers of enforcement and collected Rs. 35 lakhs from people transporting contraband in the form of plain and filter sand to the State capital from many parts of the district, an act that was illegal. Mr. Raji Reddy said that the amount collected by `revenue' officials had not been remitted into the account of the ZP. In addition to this some officers were using their clout to pressurise transporters and benefiting by way of money, he alleged.
