NEW DELHI, JAN. 28. Louise Frechette, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, visited the NIS Academy at South Extension here today to see for herself the functioning of the AIDS/HIV sensitising programme initiated jointly by NIS Sparta and UNDP. Also present on the occasion was Sanjeev Duggal, President and CEO of NIS Sparta, Dr. Maxine Olson, UN Resident Coordinator and Resident Representative, and the students who have undergone the programme. Ms. Frechette also interacted with the NIIT students to exchange notes on the project. These students in the age group of 15-25 spoke about their entry into the project and how the programme proved to be an "eye-opener" for them. Ms. Frechette congratulated the NIS Sparta team on the work that had been done with the students. According to a spokesperson of NIS Sparta, the project initiated in 2002 is aimed at generating awareness of AIDS-related issues and addressing the inhibitions of the individuals through behavioural transformation. "The pilot project initiated in the NIIT South Extension branch here is being carried forward to all NIIT centres across India catering to about six lakh students."
