False robbery case, culprit held

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, JAN. 28. One person has been arrested by the North Delhi police for allegedly reporting a false case of robbery after hiding an amount of well over Rs. 2 lakhs which he had collected on his employer's behalf.

According to the police, Shyam Bahadur, a resident of Jagadhri in Haryana, had reported to the Kashmere Gate police that he had been abducted and robbed of Rs. 2.7 lakhs by four persons on January 24. As per the complaint, Shyam, who works for a private firm at Jagadhri, had come to Delhi to supply the material to his employer's clients at Tri Nagar, Shahdara, Rani Bagh and Chawri Bazar.

He collected Rs. 2.7 lakhs from them and was returning to Inter-State Bus Terminus at Kashmere Gate when four persons came in a Maruti van, beat him up and abducted him. They then dumped him near G.T. Karnal Road and fled with the money. A case of robbery was registered at Kashmere Gate police station and investigations were taken up.

Investigations, however, revealed that Shyam had already got a complaint lodged at Jahangir police station in North-West Delhi for the same offence and also named five persons. However, the sequence of events in the complaint was different from what Shyam mentioned to the Kashmere Gate police. This made the police suspicious. They interrogated him further following which he confessed to having concocted the story.

It came to light that Shyam had hidden the money in a polythene bag in a forest near G.T. Karnal Road and left the bag there. At his instance, the polythene bag was recovered.

Kashmere Gate police have booked him for criminal breach of trust and getting a false incident registered with the police. Further investigations in the case are on.
