SI killed in accident

NELLORE: Vijayakumar Reddy, sub-inspector of Atmakur town, Nellore district, died in an accident on Sangam--Nellorepalem road on Wednesday night. Senior officials rushed to the accident spot. They condoled his death.

Painting exhibition

Cuddapah: An exhibition of paintings by the Principal Secretary of Tourism, Chandana Khan, who earlier served as Cuddapah Collector, was inaugurated by the Collector, Jayesh Ranjan, at the municipal stadium on Thursday as part of `Cuddapotsavalu' festival. The Collector went round the painting exhibition and instructed the officials to exhibit photographs of activities taken by Ms. Khan, while she was Collector of the district. Ms. Khan would visit Cuddapah on January 30, he said. The nodal officer for Tourism, K. Rampulla Reddy, and other officials participated.

Re-elected

Cuddapah: Srinath was re-elected president and M.V. Subramanyam as secretary of the Cuddapah district unit of the A.P. Union of Working Journalists in the union elections held unanimously here on Thursday, said the Returning Officer, R.S. Reddy, on Thursday. B. Ganesh Babu and S. Mastan Vali were elected vice-presidents, K. Ramachandra Reddy and Sudarshan Reddy as joint secretaries, K. Madhusudan Reddy as treasurer and P. Srinivasa Reddy, P. Satish, C. Suryanarayana and A. Ranganayakulu as executive members, he said.

Pat for NCC cadet

KURNOOL: The Group Commander of NCC at Kurnool, K.S. Pathania, congratulated Rohini, an NCC cadet from Kurnool and Ali from Mahabubnagar district who led the Republic Day parade at Secunderabad. Col. Pathania said it was a great honour for the NCC Group comprising Kurnool, Mahabubnagar and Anantapur. A total of 17 cadets including 10 girls represented the group at Republic Day parade in Secunderabad.

Arrested on graft charge

HYDERABAD: The Child Development Project Officer of Nandikotkur in Kurnool district, P. Venkataratnamma, was arrested by the sleuths of Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Wednesday on the charge of accepting Rs. 500 bribe from a complainant for issuing passbook under the Girl-Child Deposit Scheme. She would be produced before the Special Court for ACB Cases, Hyderabad, according to a press release

Writ plea on CM's assets: arguments on February 3

HYDERABAD: A Division Bench of the High Court comprising Chief Justice Devinder Gupta and Justice G. Rohini on Thursday declared that the arguments in the writ petition filed complaining against the disproportionate assets of the Chief Minister will be heard on February 3. The Bench heard the arguments of senior counsel, S. Ramachandra Rao, appearing for K. Laxminarayana and A.R.Amose, Congress leaders, who filed the writ petition.

The counsel stressed that in the battle against corruption technicalities like delay should not come in the way. He pleaded with the court not to view the case on mere technicality. The advocate dealt at length how prime land was allotted to the NTR Trust, which is a pocket organisation of the Chief Minister. He drew the attention of the court to the fact that the earlier round of litigation regarding allotment of land to the NTR Trust ended in dismissal and the court never went into the merits of the case. The arguments will be continued on February 3.

Directive to educational institutions

Hyderabad: Educational institutions in the State have been asked to strictly implement a two-minute silence during the morning assembly on the Martyrs' Day tomorrow as a mark of respect to the memory of freedom fighters who made supreme sacrifices for achieving Independence for the country. The Commissioner for School Education, Manmohan Singh, in a press note on Thursday, asked district educational officers to instruct all heads of schools under their jurisdictions for following the norm.

Mini Exim Policy welcomed

Hyderabad: The Federation of Andhra Pradesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FAPCCI) has welcomed the `mini' Exim Policy announced by the Union Minister for Commerce, Arun Jaitley, stating that it would help maintain momentum of exports.

C.V. Achut Rao, vice-president of FAPCCI, said in a press release here on Thursday that removal of curbs on gold and silver imports would help jewellery industry to step up export of jewellery. The Gold Card scheme would enable exporters to obtain export credit. The proposal to allow duty-free fuel imports for manufacturing sector would reduce manufacturing costs for export goods.

Prakash Singh holds talks with police officials

TIRUPATI: Prakash Singh, heading the one-man Commission constituted to probe the alleged negligence factor which led to the claymore mine attack on the Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu's convoy on the Tirumala ghat road in October last, on Thursday held a sitting with the senior police officials and also with a couple of persons who filed affidavits before it giving their views.

One of the two, who filed affidavits and was consequently summoned before the panel, was a lawyer and a Congress activist, S. Hari Hara Rayalu. He said that he in his petition drew the Commission's attention to the `shifting' of the police station located at Alipiri, the foot of the hill and the toll-gate point to some far-off location. He said Mr. Singh expressed surprise at the shifting of the station without any valid reason and visited later the spot where the station existed.

eSeva project shortlisted for global award

ELURU: The rural eSeva project in West Godavari district is among the projects shortlisted for the Stockholm Challenge Award-2003-04 under the category of `e-Governance.'

West Godavari and Krishna districts are among the 24 cities\districts that figured in the list pruned for the award by an international jury comprising 31 experts, according to the district Collector, Sanjay Jaju.

The eSeva project was launched in the district as a tool to bridge the digital divide and provide an access to various C2C (citizen-to-citizen) and C2G (citizen-to-government) services to people. These services range from issue of certificates to getting information relating to different Government programmes. Over three lakh transactions have so far been carried out under the project.

Last date extended

HYDERABAD: The NISIET has extended the last date for admission into post-graduate diploma programme of Centre for Promotion of Advanced Management Practices (C-PAMP) to February 4, 2004. Interested candidates could contact in person for admission, according to a press release.

Farmer's house burgled

ADILABAD: Robbers broke into the house of a farmer at Gotukuri village in the district in the wee hours of Thursday and decamped with Rs. 3.40 lakhs in cash.

According to reports, the farmer, Bolli Buchanna, kept the amount in the house after selling chilli and cotton produce recently. He along with his family members left for Adilabad on Wednesday on some work.

The farmer's neighbour, Deva Reddy, who found the doors of the Buchanna's house open, informed him of it. Following a complaint lodged by Buchanna, the police swung into action and took four villagers into custody for interrogation.

Express train halt

HYDERABAD: The Chennai-Jaipur tri-weekly express will be provided a two-minute halt at Nellore from February 1.

Accordingly, the train No. 2967, Chennai-Jaipur tri-weekly express, will arrive/ depart Nellore at 20.29/20.31 hrs and in the return direction, the train No. 2968 will arrive/depart at Nellore at 06.11/6.13 hrs, according to an SCR press release.

Rise in minimum temperature

Hyderabad: The upper air trough continued over the State on Thursday also causing isolated rain in coastal Andhra and Telangana. Srungavarapukota and Metpalli recorded a rainfall of 2 cm and 1 cm respectively during the 24-hour period ending this morning.

Weather was dry in Rayalaseema. The minimum temperature rose significantly at one or two places in Telangana and slightly at a few places in coastal Andhra and changed little in Rayalaseema. It was significantly above normal in coastal Andhra and Telangana and at one or two places in Rayalaseema. Arogyavaram recorded the State's lowest night temperature for the period at 18 degree Celsius.

Light to moderate rain has been forecast on Friday in Telangana and in the districts of Srikakulam, Visakhapatnam and Vizianagaram. Weather will be dry in the rest of the State.
