KOCHI, JAN. 29. The Kerala State Fishing Boat Operators Association has threatened to seize foreign deep-sea fishing vessels, licensed by the Union Government, if they continue to fish in the Arabian Sea after May. The association general secretary, Joseph Xavier Kalappurackal, told The Hindu that the boat operators, along with other fishermen's unions, would also defy the ban on trawling during the next monsoon. A combined `coastal bandh' on February 3 has already been announced to protest against the permission given to foreign vessels to fish in India's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). Mr. Kalappurackal said though the State Government, the Fisheries Minister and other Government agencies refused to acknowledge that the Centre had issued licences to foreign vessels, 32 Thailand-based vessels had been sweeping the seas for months. Trawlers from Kochi had detected them and reported to Government agencies. The permission given to these vessels was a reversal-of-sorts of the 1997 decision to stop issuing licences to foreign vessels owned by joint-venture companies, he said.
