Konkani music festival on February 7, 8

PANAJI, JAN. 29. A two-day "All-India Konkani Music Festival" is being organised by the Konkani Sangeet and Natak Akademi here at Patto from February 7 to unite all Konkanis spread over four States.

The chairman of the festival's reception committee, Tomazinho Cardozo, told presspersons here on Wednesday that troupes from Maharashtra and Karnataka, apart from those from Goa, were expected to take part in the festival. The highlight on the opening day would be "Drums of Goa", an orchestra of drums comprising "ghumat", "madhallem", tabla, and other percussion instruments. Well-known singers would pay tribute to Chris Perry and Alfred Rose, maestros of Konkani songs, by singing their songs.

Jitendra Abhisekhi's songs would be sung by various artistes on the occasion. This production was a tribute to Pt. Abhisekhi, Mr. Cardozo said. On February 8, a presentation would be made on traditional folk culture evident in the weddings of the Konkani people, he added.
