Cacophony on streets

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, JAN. 29. Restrictions on vehicular movement in view of the Beating Retreat ceremony at Vijay Chowk caused huge traffic jams in the New Delhi area on Thursday evening.

Since the area in and around Vijay Chowk was cordoned off for the entire duration of the ceremony lasting nearly one-and-a-half- hours, vehicles were subjected to many detours.

The worst affected area was the Janpath roundabout where hundreds of commuters were stranded as the few traffic policemen on duty had a tough time handling the huge volume of rush hour traffic.

Many complained that they were held up to 30 minutes due to the traffic snarl which had a cascading effect on the other nearby intersections.

Though the traffic police had announced diversion in routes in advance, there were not enough policemen on duty to regulate the traffic. The situation eased only after the Beating Retreat ceremony got over.
