`Women coming out against violence'

By Our Staff Correspondent

MANGALORE, JAN. 30. Women are the direct victims of communal violence and war, Vaidehi, winner the Attimabbe literary award, has said.

Inaugurating the ninth divisional-level women's convention of the Insurance Employees Union at Puttur on Thursday, Ms. Vaidehi said women who were shackled by traditions and customs had started asserting themselves and raising their voice against such events.

They had surmounted their traditional roles and this self-belief was significant. Women had the power to change the system.

She called upon women to educate their children to ensure that such strife did not plague the world again.

P.A. Suvarna, co-convener, women's coordination committee, South Central Zone Insurance Employees' Federation, said the economic policies of the National Democratic Alliance Government had driven thousands of people to suicide due to economic misery. The recent upsurge in the share market could not be called economic progress.

She said it was women who faced the brunt of liberalisation.
