Peter Bleach may be freed soon

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI, JAN. 30. The British demand for the release of Peter Bleach, a key accused in the Purulia arms drop case, was being actively considered, the Deputy Prime Minister, L.K. Advani, said here today.

After a 30-minute meeting with the British Home Secretary, David Blunkett, Mr. Advani told presspersons that a decision would be taken soon. "We have discussed the matter with the Law Ministry and it is of the opinion that the release of Bleach is possible."

The five Latvian crew of the Russian aircraft that had dropped arms in Purulia district of West Bengal were released over two years ago. The plane was piloted by Bleach. The main accused, Kim Peter Davy, a Danish citizen who allegedly masterminded the operation, and two others, Randy and Tadbhavananda, are still at large.

The Central Bureau of Investigation had traced Davy to Denmark but efforts to extradite him have been in vain. Once Bleach is released — he is in a Kolkata prison for about eight years now — the case against Davy would be weakened, sources said.
