BANGALORE, JAN. 30. The Sankey Tank and the park around it, which have been restored, were rededicated to the citizens of Bangalore today by the Minister for Bangalore Development, Ramalinga Reddy. The park has been improved by the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike at a cost of Rs. 4 crore. It took 12 months to complete the project. Apart from removing silt from the tank, introducing boating facility, and constructing walkways and a landscaped park, a special tank has been constructed for idol immersion. Mr. Reddy said the BMP and the Bangalore Development Authority had done an excellent job in restoring and beautifying major tanks, lakes, and parks in the past two years. Work on Ulsoor, Benniganahalli, and Hebbal lakes had been taken up by the two agencies. Over 200 parks in the city were to be beautified in the coming months, he added. Mr. Reddy launched the Cauvery Drinking Water Supply Scheme and underground drainage in the 10 wards of HMT Layout, Jalahalli, Mathikere, Amarjyothi Nagar, Mudalapaplya, Attiguppe, J.P. Nagar, BTM Layout, Jeevanbhimanagar, and Kacharakanahalli. The project would cost Rs. 149 crore. By March, more wards would be covered, the Minister said. About 155 km. of water pipes and 39 km. of underground drainage were laid at a cost of Rs. 11.25 crore. The work, which would be completed in 55 wards, would benefit 15 lakh citizens, he added. The foundation for a Rs. 15-crore grade separator was laid at Chord Road, Modi Hospital junction. Work is expected to be completed by December.
