Billiards & Snooker
By Kirti Patil
GWALIOR, JAN. 31. As long as Pankaj Advani floats in the junior pool of players, none really fancy their chances. Even so, there is a hope - to be at least number two in the country and be able to wear India colours on the international stage. For the juniors, the only chance to be there is through the Nationals. The competition here at the 28th junior National snooker championship in Jiwaji University is so intense that 35 players went through the gruelling qualifying tournament earlier this week for just two berths in the main draw. Rahul Agarwal and Mrinal Modak joined the 37 direct entrants who cued off on Saturday morning to be among the four finalists. India's No. 2 Sourav Kothari and third-ranked Aditya Mehta progressed with contrasting styles Kothari overcame Divya Sharma 68-15, 71-55, 57-62, 62-10, while Mehta notched a facile 59-8, 81-10, 59-21 win over Shivam Arora and moved into the quarterfinals.
