Double delight for Rupesh

By Our Sports Reporter

KOLKATA, JAN. 31. Indian junior champion Rupesh Roy annexed a double crown with two stellar performances on Saturday, first winning the boys' singles as the second-seed and then partnered compatriot Anshuman Dutta to lift the doubles' title in the ONGC-ITF junior (grade III) tennis here at the DKS clay courts.

The girls' singles title was won by I-Hsuan Hwang of Chinese Taipei who beat seventh-seeded Pichittra Thongdach of Thailand in straight sets in the final.

Roy struck invincible form as he realised both the boys' titles on offer with convincing ease to continue his super start in the season and added to his growing kitty of international points. Having learned a great part of his tennis lessons at the city, Roy, who is now furthering his career at Delhi, was the local favourite and he justified it with a outstanding performance.

On the way to the singles title Roy stopped the giant-killing run of unseeded Lai Xiao-Peng of Hong Kong, who had moved to final ousting the top-seeded Navdeep Singh, beating the latter in straight sets in a battle lasting a little over an hour.

Roy reproduced the form and the result meeting Peng for the second time in the day in the boys' doubles final. The doubles event had Roy and his partner, Anshuman Dutta, without any seeding unsettled the second-seeded Hong Kong combination of Peng and Martin Sayer 6-1, 6-3.

Seventh-seeded Thongdach, who had won the girls' doubles title pairing Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium on Friday, failed to complete a double crown. She was totally outclassed by the third seeded Hwang, who displayed effective power tennis to beat the Thai girl in straight sets 6-4, 6-3.# The results (finals):

Boys' singles: 2-Rupesh Roy (Ind) bt Lai Xiao-Peng (HKg) 6-4, 6-4.

Boys' doubles: Rupesh Roy & Anshuman Dutta (Ind) bt 2-Martin Sayer & Lai Xiao-Peng (HKg) 6-1, 6-3.

Girls' singles: 3-I-Hsuan Hwang (Tpe) bt 7-Pichittra Thongdach (Thai) 6-4, 6-3.
