Venkatesh overcomes Prakash

CHENNAI, JAN. 31. National junior champion M.R. Venkatesh of Bharat Petroleum overcame G.B. Prakash of Indian Bank in the 12th round to stay in contention for the Grandmaster norm in the 1st Orient Flight School open chess tournament here.

In a day of hard fought draws on Saturday, Alexandre Fominyh, the 44-year-old Russian Grandmaster maintained his top spot with a 58-move draw with the black pieces against Shukhrat Safin of Uzbekistan. Fominyh leads with 9.5 points and needs a draw in the final round on Sunday to win the tournament.

Grandmaster Koneru Humpy got an extra pawn but had to spend time reorganising her pieces and repeat the position to make a draw with the white pieces against Tahir Vakhidov of Uzbekistan. Humpy shares the second spot with four others on nine points.

In battles involving the visitors, Saidali Iuldachev of Uzbekistan and Ziaur Rahman of Bangladesh won with white against Sergei Iskusnyh of Russia and Marat Dzhumaev of Uzbekistan respectively to join those on the second place with nine points.

Venkatesh spotted a tactic to win a piece on the 16th move in a computer-like fashion to defeat GM-elect Prakash with the black pieces in just 23 moves from a Grunfeld defence game. According to the arbiters, Venkatesh needs a victory on Sunday for his maiden Grandmaster norm.
