Semifinalists spotted

CHENNAI, JAN. 31. North-East Zone winner Delhi meets Osmania and Bangalore takes on South-West Zone winner Jiwaji (Gwalior) in the semifinals of the all-India inter-university tennis tournament for men.

In the quarterfinals here on Saturday, Delhi and Osmania posted easy 3-0 victories over Sri Venkateswara and Punjab respectively at the Anna University courts while Bangalore and Jiwaji also scored victories by an identical 3-0 margin over Kurukshetra and Aligarh Muslim at the SRMC courts. However, the matches at SRMC were well contested.

Bangalore's G. Arjun was stretched by Kurukshetra's Sahil Dabra in the first singles while the doubles tie between Jiwaji's Vikas Panda and A. Praful and Aligarh Muslim's K. Afzal and B. Chaturvedi was also a three-setter.

R. Nataraj, Commissioner of Police, inaugurated the championship at Anna University.

The results (quarterfinals):

Delhi bt Sri Venkateswara, Tirupati 3-0 (Parantap Chaturvedi bt Arun Kumar Reddy 6-1, 6-2; Wrik Ganguly bt Md. Athaullah 6-1, 6-1; Sumit Chaudhary & Tushar Garg bt Arun Kumar & Athaullah 6-3, 6-0).

Osmania bt Punjab 3-0 (Yasser Arafat bt Izreek Singh 6-2, 6-2; V. Vignesh bt Vikas Sharma 6-1, 6-3; Arafat & Rohan Srivatsava bt Prabhjit Singh & Sikander Jaitley 6-2, 6-4).

Bangalore bt Kurukshetra 3-0 (G. Arjun bt Sahil Dabra 6-1, 6-7 (6), 6-2; Kiran Kumar bt Vikramjeet Singh 6-1, 6-1; Anirudh & Kiran bt Sahil & Vikramjeet 7-5, 6-3).

Jiwaji (Gwalior) bt Aligarh Muslim 3-0 (S. Sacheti bt B. Chaturvedi 7-5, 4-6, 6-1; I.K. Mahajan bt Md. Athur 4-1 conceded; Vikas Panda & A. Praful bt K. Afzal & Chaturvedi 4-6, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (6).
