DGP opens forensic science

laboratory at Kurnool

KURNOOL: The Director-General of Police, S.R. Sukumara, on Saturday inaugurated the regional forensic science laboratory, constructed at a cost of Rs 40 lakhs, here.

Talking to reporters, Mr. Sukumara said the department planned to set up laboratories in each range. The present laboratory, which would cater to the needs of Kurnool and Cuddapah districts, was sixth in the series. Until now, the samples from these districts had been tested at Tirupathi.

Later, the DGP reviewed the law and order situation in the region.

Highest shipment by Ore Handling Complex

VISAKHAPATNAM: The Ore Handling Complex (OHC) at the Visakhapatnam Port Trust (VPT) established an all-time record by loading the highest quantity of 11.44 lakh tonnes this month, surpassing the previous best loading of 10.59 lakh tonnes achieved in September last year.

According to a spokesman of the VPT, about 19 vessels were loaded with iron ore/pellets at the Outer Harbour in January this year as against 15 vessels loaded in September last.

Woman held on charge of selling illicit liquor

Cuddapah: A woman of Vempalle town has been arrested under the Preventive Detention Act (Act 1 of 1986) on orders issued by the District Collector, Jayesh Ranjan, on the charge of habitually selling illicitly- distilled liquor. Desu Lakshmamma (40), wife of Desu Sreeramulu of Piathota in Vempalle town, was arrested on Thursday night and was handed over to the Superintendent of the Central Prison at Chanchalguda in Hyderabad yesterday for detention, said the Prohibition and Excise Superintendent, L.C. Muralidhar, on Saturday.

Former judge appointed chief of body on Income Tax

HYDERABAD: Syed Shah Mohammad Quadri, retired judge of the Supreme Court, has been appointed chairman of the Authority for Advance Rulings (Income Tax) constituted under chapter XIX-B, Section 245-O of the Income Tax Act 1961, for three years. The appointment will take effect from the date he assumes office.

According to an order issued by the Finance Ministry, Justice Quadri of Tolichowki will hold additional charge of the post of chairman, Authority for Advance Rulings (Customs and Central Excise) for years. He will not get any remuneration for this additional charge.

Public Prosecutor in ACB net

CHITTOOR: Officials of theAnti-Corruption Bureau trapped the Public Prosecutor of the Chittoor District Court, Sathyanarayana, while receiving money from a client last night. He was also working as incharge PP for the special court set up for enquiring cases relating to the electricity department. Narayana, a cool drink shop owner at Buch Nayanikandriga, was arrested on December 22 last year on the charge of power pilferage. The relations of Narayana filed a bail petition in the court of the Additional Magistrate at Chittoor. The PP reportedly promised his relations to help in getting a bail if they paid him Rs. 1000. The ACBs sleuths raided his house and trapped him while receiving the amount.

Police, naxals exchange fire

VISAKHAPATNAM: The Greyhounds and People's War (PW) naxalites exchanged fire in the Chintagoppa Gorilova forest area in Gudem Kotha Veedhi mandal in the district on Saturday.

The gunfire, which began at 7.45 a.m., lasted about five minutes. No casualties or injuries were reported, police said. It occurred when the Greyhounds was combing in one of the strongholds of the PW.

BJP represents to poll panel

HYDERABAD: The Bharatiya Janata Party has lodged protest with the Election Commission against the deletion of 64 lakh names during the recent revision of electoral rolls in the State.

A delegation of the BJP led by its national general secretary, Muqtar Abbas Naqvi, the vice-president, Bal Apte, the official spokesman, Prakash Javdekar, the Union Minister of State for Urban Development, B. Dattatreya, and State-level leaders met the full three-member Commission led by J.M. Lyngdoh at Delhi on Friday to represent the matter.

The delegation appealed for extension of time to submit appeals for inclusion of names by 10 more days. Mandal revenue officers should be designated as appellant authorities, the delegation said.

Fake coins racket busted

SRIKAKULAM: The Patapatnam police have arrested six persons allegedly involved in a racket bringing counterfeit coins of Rs 5 into circulation. According to the Circle Inspector, K Rajendra, on a tip-off, a watch was kept and B Yerraiah of Patapatnam was arrested and seven coins were seized from him. On information provided by him, A Hemasundara Rao and A Janardhana Rao of Temburu were arrested and 18 coins were seized from them. After questioning them, Gedela Appanna and Pentla Krishna Rao of Parlakimidi were held and 10 coins were found with them. The trail was then traced to G Ananda Rao, who had supplied the coins, and he was held. Ananda Rao and Krishna Rao together circulated 20,000 coins amounting to Rs 1 lakh, Mr Rajendra said. Ananda Rao's information led them to M Satyanarayana Reddy of Penumantra in West Godavari district, the CI said. However, he was arrested by the Hyderabad police on January 14 and the material and machinery used was seized.

Moderate rain forecast

Hyderabad: Light to moderate rain will continue in parts of the State on Sunday also due to the trough. The gain will be at a few places in Telangana and `isolated' in coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema, according to a forecast issued by the State Met office. During the 24-hour period ending this morning, there was rain at a few places in Telangana and coastal Andhra while weather was mainly dry in Rayalaseema.

Ramagundam received 2 cm and the Hakimpet and Hyderabad airports, Mahabubnagar, Dowlaiswaram, Ibrahimpatnam, and Srungavarapukota 1 cm each.

The minimum temperatures changed little in the State. They were significantly above normal at a few places in Rayalaseema and above normal in coastal Andhra and Telangana. The lowest night temperature for the period was recorded at 19 degrees C by three places— Arogyavaram and the Hakimpet and Hyderabad airports.

Plea to scrap GO

Cuddapah: The Andhra Pradesh Medical Laboratory Technicians Association leaders on Saturday demanded scrapping of G.O. No. 12, issued earlier this month, directing termination of the contractual appointment of civil assistant surgeons and paramedical staff, who put in three years of service. The G.O. came in the wake of a plea by the Director of Health for orders for continuation of contractual employees for the third year, they said.

Plea to revoke suspension

CHITTOOR: The Congress floor leader in the municipal council has faxed a letter, carrying signatures of party councillors, to the high command to lift suspension orders imposed on the former legislature, C.K. Babu, on the basis of a case filed against him by the police for his allegedly involvement in a murder case. The letter said that the case was foisted by the police under the instigation of Telugu Desam Party leaders with a view to defaming him.

NELLORE: Nellore Dolendra Prasad, Editor, `Zamin Ryot' Telugu Weekly, has been appointed member of the Central Film Censor Board. He has been in the field of journalism for more than 25 years and also served as the Trust Board Chairman of Sri Talpagiri Ranganathaswamy temple, Nellore.

Voter enrolment

KURNOOL: Applications for voter enrolment can be presented to mandal revenue officers or constituency MROs even now. In the revised guidelines, Election Commission authorities have said the voter enrolment is a continuous process which can be taken up till the day of announcement of elections. The election cell has received 5,874 representations seeking inclusion in the voter list since their names figured in the deletion list or not enrolled even after formal application. The cell will forward all the applications to RDOs for verification of the claims. The last date for appeals is February 4.
