Naidu spells out energy priorities

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD, JAN. 31. The Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, spoke of confirmed power shortage in the State and spelt out steps for effectively meeting the situation and saving standing rabi crop.

According to details provided to him by the Principal Secretary, Energy, Jannath Hussain, the energy demand met these days was revolving around 130 million units per day and every day the load was increasing by 4 mu on an average. With the likely full-scale operation of agricultural pumpsets, the demand was expected to go up to 140 mu by mid-February, reaching a high of 150 mu by March.

Taking stock of the situation at a review at his residence earlier, the Chief Minister spoke with the Union Power Minister, and arranged for an immediate transfer of 60 MW to the State from surplus regions through the Power Trading Corporation and extracted a promise for a further 120 MW in the coming few days. These would be in addition to the flow already realised from the Eastern sector.

Standing crop remained Mr Naidu's main concern at the two meetings. He said farmers had sown paddy on large areas much against the advice by the Government/Transco for irrigated dry crops but these crops would have to be saved at any cost even if it meant extra purchase of power from other States. Issuing a strict instruction to district Collectors/Transco engineers for this, he said they would be held responsible if any crop dried up anywhere due to lack of quality in supply and interruption.

He made it clear that the electricity arrears due from SC/ST colonies had been written off as a policy and none should demand these amounts. The review meeting was attended by the Energy Minister, K. Subbarayudu, and the Transco Chairman and Managing Director, Rachel Chatterjee.
