Stamp on Annamacharya

By Our Special Correspondent

TIRUPATI, JAN. 31. The Union Ministry of Communications, IT and Department of Posts would be releasing on March 29 this year a commemorative stamp on the saint-poet, Annamacharya, who composed 32,000 verses in Telugu in praise of Lord Venkateswara. This follows a requisition submitted to the Ministry of Communications by K. Srinivasulu, former Director of the TTD's Sri Venkateswara recording project. He was also the former Director of the TTD's Annamacharya project, which brought out editions on the works of the saint-poet.

The Annamacharya works engraved on copper plates were excavated three decades ago from behind a granite slab on the Tirumala temple complex and were subsequently referred to a battery of leading Telugu litterateurs, who deciphered them and brought out editions.

The Ministry in a letter addressed to K. Srinivasulu with copies marked to other proponents has communicated its "approval" of the proposal.
