Belgaum
By Our Staff Correspondent
BELGAUM, JAN. 31. The Centre has cut Rs. 1.07 crore in the allocation under the Swarna Jayanti Rozgar Yojana for the Belgaum Zilla Panchayat for 2003-04. The matter came up for discussion at the general body meeting of the zilla panchayat with Opposition members from the All India Progressive Janata Dal protesting against the Centre's decision. They also criticised the officials for their alleged lapse in protecting the interests of the district. The Chief Executive Officer of the zilla panchayat, Rajendra Kataria, who replied to the queries of the members, said the zilla panchayat had failed to utilise the funds provided under the scheme in 2002-03. This apart, beneficiaries had not been selected according to the procedure. The beneficiaries should have been approved by the respective gram panchayats. Consequently, the Centre had reduced the funds, he said. Mr. Kataria, who assumed charge a few months ago, promised that it would be his responsibility to ensure that the benefits of the scheme reached the deserving sections during the next financial year. The advice of the Chairman of Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Ltd., Veerkumar Patil, that zilla panchayat members be consulted before forwarding applications for approval to the Government to avoid lapses, was welcomed. The members also discussed the drought situation in the district and urged the authorities concerned to take steps to supply drinking water on priority. The zilla panchayat President, Doddagouda Sannagouda, presided over the meeting. The Horticulture Minister and district in-charge, V.S. Koujalgi, and Shyam B. Ghatge, Prakash Hukkeri, Ramesh Jarkiholi, Subash Koujalgi, Mahantesh Koujalgi, V. Patil, and Kakasaheb Patil, MLAs, were present.
