ALAPPUZHA, JAN. 31. The Tourism Minister, K. V. Thomas, will inaugurate the project for cleaning canals of Alappuzha municipality at a function near Alappuzha AR Camp on February 5 at 4 p.m., the MLA, K.C. Venugopal, and the District Collector, K.M. Ramanandan, said here today. The Alappuzha MP, V.M. Sudheeran, would be the chief guest. Mr. Venugopal would preside. Mr. Venugopal said that the aim was to complete the project within 120 days. The estimated cost of the proposed cleaning works was Rs 1.35 crores, he said. The project had been prepared by the District Tourism Promotion Council. The Water Resources Department would carry out the work. The District Collector said that a countdown board would be placed at the work site to inform the public on the progress of the work. Mr. Venugopal requested the trade unions not to create labour problems once the work began. Various Government departments which had differences of opinion about the project should settle it, he said. Mr. Venguopal said that the State Government would allot more funds for the development of the canal in the future. A committee has been formed to monitor the progress of works.
