NEW DELHI, JAN. 31. To help students appearing for their annual Class X and XII examinations cope with pre-examination anxiety and stress, the non-profit organisation Snehi will this year too provide free counselling through its helpline Disha. To be manned by 35 trained volunteer counsellors under the supervision of consultant psychologists, psychiatrists and eight senior counsellors, this will be Disha's fifth year of providing the service for anxious students and parents. To be available from February 1 to March 6, students can call the numbers 26521415 and 26521494 between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. An organisation for psycho-social support and mental health care, Snehi had attended nearly 1,447 calls last year, with nearly 74.42 per cent of the total calls made to it being from students who were psychologically distressed and emotionally perturbed while 21 per cent of the calls had been made to seek specific information related to various examinations including the Board exams. With nearly 61 per cent of the students counselled last year appearing for Board exams, Class X and XII are likely to be the focal point of this year's counselling sessions too. But clearly, the pressure to perform well in annual exams is high on even those appearing for other tests as the Snehi figures show. The organisation claims that nearly 39 per cent of the callers were students from class IV to those in college. "We have realised from the kind of complaints and problems students have shared in the last five pre-exam help lines and the situational stress they face can be detrimental for not only their performance in exams but also to their health and future studies too,'' pointed out Snehi in a release issued today.
