Moily opens mini-fisheries harbour

By Our Staff Correspondent

HEJMADY, (UDUPI DT.), JAN. 31. The former Chief Minister, M. Veerappa Moily, on Saturday said the tenure of the Krishna Government had witnessed all round progress in the State. He was speaking after inaugurating the Hejmady mini-fisheries harbour here. The Rajeev Gandhi Stadium, the Hejmady-Nadikudru bridge, Amavasya Kariya-Hejmady Road, and Sampath Salian Memorial Junior Athletic Meet were also inaugurated on the occasion.

Mr. Moily said over 11 lakh houses had been built for the poor by the Congress Government. The State Government's emphasis on infrastructure had seen roads being laid in different parts of the State. It had evolved schemes such as Stree Shakti, which had led to the empowerment of women. Stree Shakti self-help groups had saved Rs. 750 crore in the State, he added.

The construction of a mini fisheries harbour at Hejmady would immensely benefit fishermen living here and in the neighbouring areas. Basic infrastructure would be provided at the harbour by the end of the year.

The Minister of State for Ports and Fisheries and district in-charge, Vasanth V. Salian, said the mini fisheries harbour had been built at a cost of Rs. 1.35 crore. A proposal for its construction was forwarded to the Centre in 1992-93. But the Union Government had given its approval for the construction of a jetty at a cost of Rs. 95 lakh, which included the construction of a landing quay, an auction yard, an office building, power connection, and dredging works. While half of the cost of the project had been reimbursed by the Centre, the rest had been borne by the State Government, he added. The State Government had purchased 13.84 acres of land at a cost of Rs. 45.94 lakh. A sum of Rs. 1.35 crore was spent on the project till November 2003, he added.

The slipway of the harbour would provide berthing facility to 15 purse seine boats, 19 trawlers, 314 gilnet boats, and 52 country boats. A sum of Rs. 60 lakh had been sanctioned by the State Government on January 9 this year to remove the silt in the slipway. Desilting works to the tune of Rs. 20 lakh would be completed by March 31, he said. The remaining work would be taken up after April 2004.

A sum of Rs. 4 lakh had been spent on the construction of a boat ramp at the harbour, while Rs. 18 lakh had been spent on the construction of a road. He said Rs. 2.83 crore had been spent on the construction of the harbour and providing various infrastructure facilities to fishermen.

The Hejmady-Nadikudru bridge had been constructed at a cost of Rs. 60 lakh, while the stadium had been constructed at a cost of Rs. 65 lakh, Mr. Salian said.

Vinaykumar Sorake, MP, M.N. Rajendra Kumar, Chairman of the SCDCC Bank, K. Diwakar Shetty, President of the Dakshina Kannada Milk Producers' Union, M.A. Gafoor, a member of the Udupi Zilla Panchayat, Kusum Salian, President of the Hejmady Gram Panchayat, and Vasanthi, Ekalayva Award Winner, were present.
