Industry-specific programmes planned in Tirupur

By Our Staff Reporter

TIRUPUR, JAN. 31 . The South India Hosiery Manufacturers' Association (SIHMA) Institute of Fashion Designing and Apparel Training plans to give impetus to training programmes tailor-made for individual knitwear units in the town.

The SIHMA president, Mohan P. Kandamsamy, told The Hindu that the institute, started in 2000, was offering short-term courses to freshers and those employed in the industry.

For those in the industry, programmes were offered in subjects like merchandising, pattern making and computer pattern making. The duration of these courses varied between two and four months. It was now proposed to start a short-term course in international marketing. Since these programmes catered to those already in the industry, they were organised either before or after office hours. Courses in merchandising and pattern making evinced better response, he added. With regard to those who have completed plus two or graduation, one-year courses were offered in production and design management and in visual merchandising. These two courses totally had around 65 students and industry training was part of the programme.

Further, placements were also arranged for these students.

Apart from these regular courses, he said that, the institute now planned to focus more on training programmes that could be organised at the units. Two or three such programmes had already been held. The duration of these could vary according to the requirement of the units. Subjects like quality, management and planning production could be the main areas of training. These would however be prepared according to the requirement of the specific industry. Courses could also be organised in fashion designing and pattern making.

With increasing demand for skilled manpower, these programmes would benefit the industry to a great extent, he said.
