Coastal hartal

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, JAN. 31. The Kerala Fisheries Co-ordination Committee, comprising 36 organisations in the fisheries sector in the State, will be observing a `coastal hartal' and stage a march to the Accountant General's office in the city, on February 3, in protest against the decision of the Union Government to grant fresh licences to 32 more foreign trawlers for deep sea trawling off the Indian coast. They have also given a call to close down all fish markets on February 3 as a mark of solidarity to the proposed agitation.

Russian writers

The works of Russian authors have contributed a great deal in strengthening the ties between the peoples of India and Russia, according to renowned writer K. Ayyappa Panikkar. Inaugurating a monthly programme on "My favourite Russian writer", organised by the Russian Cultural Centre in the city, he observed that the works of almost all the major Russian writers had been translated into Malayalam.

Arrested

A police team headed by the DySP, Attingal, Ravilal, late on January 30 arrested Amir (22), son of Faziluddin, in connection with the murder of Mohammed Rafi, alias Babu, of Anchuthengu near Attingal on the night of January 29. He has been remanded to judicial custody by the court in Varkala. Rafi's body had been found, with his limbs allegedly severed.
