HYDERABAD, JAN. 31. A depositor of the Prudential Co-operative Urban Bank, M. A. Basith (58), who set himself ablaze on January 25 allegedly after failing to secure refund of the Rs. 2 lakhs he had deposited in the bank, succumbed at the Osmania General Hospital on Saturday. The victim's brother, Wahed, in his complaint with the Chatrinaka police on Saturday stated that Basith had deposited the money with the PUCB to perform his third daughter's marriage. He ran from pillar to post in vain to get the repayment after the bank ran into crisis a few months ago. "He was worried and depressed as hopes of getting the money back vanished even as his daughter's marriage was fixed next month. This drove him to suicide," Wahed said. A resident of Ghulam Murtaza Chawni, Basith was a retired employee of Electronics Corporation of India Limited. He got nearly Rs. 5 to 6 lakhs in cash towards retirement benefits and had performed the marriage of two of his six daughters. He had petitioned several officials and the bank management for refund of the money, Wahed said. On January 25, he doused himself with kerosene and set himself ablaze. He was admitted to the OGH with 60 per cent burns and died while undergoing treatment.
