Kalam condoles death of Suraiyya, Jog

NEW DELHI, FEB. 1. The President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, today condoled the deaths of the singer and actress Suraiyya and violinist V.C. Jog.

In a message, Mr. Kalam said: "Suraiyya was one of the Indian cinema's greatest singer and was a representative of that age of Hindi films when stars were versatile and, therefore, not only acted but also sang their own songs in the movies."

The 75-year-old Suraiyya died in Mumbai on Saturday after a brief illness.

In a condolence message to Jog's wife, the President said: "Pandit Jog was also well-known for his music composition and producer whose music and composition left the connoisseurs spellbound."

The violinist died in Kolkata on Saturday at the age of 89. — PTI
