Farmers can take loans on stored dry chilli, tamarind

HYDERABAD, FEB. 1. The Commissioner for Marketing, D.S. Murthy, said that farmers could avail themselves of loan facility for stored dry chilli and tamarind too under the `Rythu Bandhu' scheme, apart from paddy, maize, turmeric and pulses.

In a press release here on Saturday, he said that Rs.100 crores had been earmarked under the scheme this financial year. About Rs.35 crores had been availed of by 10,378 farmers up to December last. The loan obtained under the scheme would be interest-free for 90 days. Farmers could take loans up to 75 per cent of the value of the produce stored by them in the Market Committee godowns.

Mr. Murthy said that loans could also be obtained for the produce stored in warehouses of the Central and State Governments or in the godowns of primary agricultural cooperative societies under the scheme. Loans to the tune of Rs. 73.66 crores were taken by 20,414 farmers during 2002-03.
