VSP's contribution for tennis tourney

HYDERABAD: B.K. Panda, Chairman-cum-Managing Director, Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, presented a cheque for Rs. 30 lakhs to the Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, here on Saturday. The amount is VSP's sponsorship contribution for the WTA Indian Open Tennis Championship beginning here on February 16.

CITU's call on industrial strike

HYDERABAD: The State committee of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) has called for serving of notice by all industries in the State on February 9 intending to go on strike on February 24. Various trade unions and associations have given a call for the strike to protect their right to strike work and in protest against liberalised economic policies.

M. Veeraiah, general secretary of CITU, said in a press release on Sunday that on February 7 district-level joint conventions would be organised on the eve of the strike.

Meanwhile, the All-India Kisan Sabha, which concluded its two-day meeting here on January 31, called upon peasantry and agricultural workers in the country to take to the streets on February 24 in response to the strike called by eight major central trade union organisations.

2 boys of Borstal School escape

NIZAMABAD: Two boys of the only Borstal School in the State escaped on Sunday taking advantage of the lax security arrangements on the outskirts of the town.

According to reports, the inmates -- Bachana Haribabu (19), resident of Akkayapalem in Visakhapatnam, and David Raju (20) of Kancharlapalam also of Visakhapatnam -- were lodged in the school on conviction in separate theft cases. Haribabu was brought to the school in May last while David Raju was lodged here since December last.

Today being Sunday, the inmates were allowed to play in the volleyball court inside the school adjoining the district jail. A few inmates went back to their cell after playing the game, but Haribabu and David Raju stayed back on the pretext that they wanted to play. Later, they escaped by scaling wall.

TRS demands white paper on Nizam's jewellery

HYDERABAD: The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) has asked the State Government to come out with a white paper on the status of Nizam's jewellery.

Its senior leader, A. Narendra, at a news conference here on Sunday alleged that ornaments worth Rs. 1,000 crores had been replaced with artificial jewellery with the connivance of the Government. Only the fake jewellery would be displayed at the Chowmohalla museum to be inaugurated by the Prime Minister, A.B. Vajpayee, later this month, he alleged. Valuable antiques, particularly master showpieces like daggers, were stolen from the collections regularly, he added.

The TRS stand to sell Nizam's jewellery for development of Telangana was vindicated in these circumstances when the wealth got frittered away, he said.

Congress cell meet put off

HYDERABAD: The first executive committee meeting of the Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee's Scheduled Tribe wing has been postponed by a day. It will be held on February 3 at Gandhi Bhavan.

The APCC president, D. Srinivas, will attend the meeting as chief guest while Devara Subba Rao, chairman of the wing, will preside. Many senior Congress leaders will also participate in the meeting, according to a press release.

Telugu Academy official promoted

HYDERABAD: A. Manjulatha, Deputy Director of Telugu Academy, who is officiating as in-charge Director, has been temporarily promoted to the post of Director with immediate effect. A press release issued by the Chairman, N.Md. Farooq, Minister for Higher Education, stated on Saturday that she was liable for reversion at any time without notice and without assigning any reasons.

Website launched Hyderabad: The Social Welfare Minister, J. R. Pushpa Raj, has inaugurated a website exclusively for residential educational institutions run by the AP Social Welfare Residential Educational Institutions Society, a departmental wing.

The site gives details of the 294 institutions of the society spread all over the State and of the 1.15 lakh inmates. The Principal Secretary of the Department, Ajayendra Pyal, the society Secretary, Poonam Malakondaiah, and others were present at the brief function organised at Sankshema Bhavan. The site is www.apswreis.net.

Six farm workers hospitalised

ELURU: Six farm workers of Vegivada in Pedavegi mandal were hospitalised after consuming water mixed with pesticide. Unwittingly, one of them used a pot, which was used by a farmer for mixing pesticide the previous day, to fetch water from a nearby borewell for consumption. They frothed and vomited immediately after drinking the water. They were taken to the Government hospital.

According to sources in the hospital, the condition of three of them was critical.

Cheating case against advocate

ELURU: The police arrested an advocate of Tadepalligudem for his involvement in a case of cheating in the guise of an income tax officer. According to the Superintendent of Police, K. Rajaratnam Naidu, the advocate cheated a paddy commission agent of Krishna district to the tune of Rs. 19.6 lakhs at Attili while travelling in the Circar Express last year by posing himself as an income tax officer.

Adilabad records lowest temperature

HYDERABAD: Adilabad received 1 cm rainfall on Sunday and also turned out to be the coldest part in the State with night temperature being at 18 degree Celsius. There was isolated rain in coastal Andhra and Telangana while dry weather prevailed in Rayalseema. The minimum temperature changed little in the State. There will be light to moderate rain at a few places in Telangana and Rayalaseema on Monday and isolated falls in coastal Andhra, according to a weather bulletin.

Arrangements for `Arogya Mela' reviewed

NELLORE: The district Collector, G. Anantha Ramu, has called for proper co-ordination among the departments concerned for making the proposed three-day `Arogya Mela' at Atmakur from February 10 a success.

Mr. Anantha Ramu reviewed the arrangements for the mela at a meeting on Saturday. He said that free medical services would be provided to the deserving. More than 15 specialists and 40 doctors would be available for consultations. The Nellore MP, V. Rajeswaramma, said that Rs. 8 lakhs had been sanctioned by the Union Health Ministry for the health camp.

ITC launches incense sticks

TIRUPATI: The ITC Limited has launched `Mangal Deep', a new brand of incense sticks in Tirupati recently. They are available in 1,000 outlets across Tirupati, a release said.

Interactive meet

TIRUPATI: An interactive meet on `Fostering Intellectual property culture - Role of industry and institute network' was organised by the Andhra Pradesh Technology Development and Promotion Centre, a constituent of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) on the premises of ICFAI National College recently.

K. Subodh Kumar, consultant, highlighted the challenges related to the enforcement of the new intellectual property regime and explained how industry-institute linkage could play an important role.

Medical camp held

KURNOOL: MP, Bhuma Nagireddy, inaugurated the medical camp sponsored by the Union Government under the health melas at Nandyal town on Sunday. An amount of Rs. 8 lakhs was earmarked for each parliamentary constituency. The District Medical and Health Officer, K.K. Sai Prasad, the officer in-charge of the medical camp, B.V. Subba Reddy, and others were present.

11 cases settled

NANDYAL: The Lok Adalat, led by the Third Additional District Judge, A. Pullaiah, settled 11 cases at Nandyal on Saturday.

Record room opened

KURNOOL: The Collector, Ajay Jain, inaugurated the treasury record room in the Collectorate here on Saturday. The record room was built at a cost of Rs. 2 lakhs. The District Treasury Officer, J. Prasad, was present.
