Cherukolpuzha Hindu meet begins

By Our Staff Reporter

PATHANAMTHITTA, FEB 1 . The 92nd annual Hindu religious meet, organised by the Hindumatha Maha Mandalam (HMM), began on the sand-bed of the Pampa river at Cherukolpuzha, near Kozhencherry, this afternoon.

The vice-chairman of the Mata Amritanandamayi Math, Swami Amruthaswaroopananda Puri, inaugurated the week-long convention at 3.30 p.m. today.

Addressing the gathering, Swami Amruthaswaroopananda said strengthening military might or providing employment to all would not bring an end to social unrest in different countries. A feeling of spiritual oneness among mankind was the need of the hour to restore social peace and brotherhod in a world of chaos, he said.

The Swami said greed was the bane of the modern world and it was high time that mankind fought this evil and saved society and the world from destruction. He said conversion from one religion to another without stabilising one's mind would only bring about chaos and destabilise social peace. Similarly, spreading faslehood in the name of religion should be shunned, he added.

Swami Amruthaswaroopananda said the teachings of great spiritual masters such as Vidyadhiraja Chattambi Swami, Sree Narayana Guru and Mata Amritanandamayi were very relevant in the chaotic modern world. The former Chief Secretary, R. Ramachandran Nair, delivered the keynote address. Swami Prabhakarananda Saraswathi, the HMM president and former president of the Travancore Devaswom Board, T.N. Upendranatha Kurup, and Ramesh Chennithala, MP, addressed the inaugural meet.

Earlier, Swami Amruthaswaroopananda Puri was received with the sacred Poorna Kumbh at the Vidyadhiraja Nagar, the convention venue.

The religious meet will conclude on February 8.
