NEW DELHI, FEB. 1. The Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, Vijai Kapoor, today declared that about 600 commercial complexes which had been developed by Delhi Development Authority but have degraded under the maintenance of Municipal Corporation of Delhi over a period of time would be again taken back by DDA for one-time upgradation before being handed over to residents associations, occupants and users for maintenance. Announcing this at the foundation-stone laying ceremony of a library and community hall being constructed by Delhi Development Authority at Sant Nagar, Mr Kapoor said, "Community halls were essential in any given area and for the purpose of their maintenance and day-to-day running, the local community would be involved." The Lieutenant Governor, who presided over the function, also gave details of the sports infrastructure being developed by DDA and said there were about 14 sports complexes and dozens of multi-gyms and fitness halls which have been developed and are being maintained by the Authority. In his address, the Member of Parliament and president of All India Sports Council, Vijay Kumar Malhotra, who laid the foundation stone of the Rs 45-lakh library and community hall, said DDA has undertaken several development activities in South Delhi and was now constructing the community hall on the request of the local residents. Pointing out that several construction works have been taken up by DDA in the area, he said besides Astha Kunj, which is being developed on an area of about 200 acres at a cost of over Rs 150 crores, DDA was also creating a massive sports infrastructure by taking up new projects such as the Commonwealth Games Village which will be used during the event in 2010. The Vice-Chairman of DDA, Anil Baijal, said by providing necessary inputs, such as community halls, DDA was striving to create a harmonious atmosphere for community living in the city. Noting that it has already constructed 45 community halls, he said a model for transferring these community halls to the residents welfare associations is being worked out so that the maintenance is self-sustaining and carried out properly.
