PM promises help to trace missing Haj pilgrims
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM,
FEB. 2.
The Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, has assured Kerala that the Union Government will help to trace several Haj pilgrims still missing after Sunday's stampede at Mina in the Saudi holy city of Mecca.
The assurance came from Mr. Vajpayee after the Kerala Chief Minister, A.K. Antony, drew his attention to the concern being expressed by relatives of the missing people.
While two pilgrims from the State were reported dead in the tragedy, several were still missing and their family members were deeply concerned about their safety.
The Chief Minister sought the Centre's help to get information about them from Jeddah.
Mr. Antony, who had a brief meeting with the Prime Minister at the Raj Bhavan last night, also sought liberal Central assistance for the drought-hit areas of the State.
``The Prime Minister has assured sympathetic consideration of the demand,'' Mr. Antony told reporters at Thiruvananthapuram airport after seeing off Mr. Vajpayee. UNI
