`Tirunelveli must forgo one constituency'
By Our Staff Reporter
TIRUNELVELI,
FEB. 2.
The State Election Commissioner, V. Palanisamy, today said Tirunelveli district would have to forgo one Assembly constituency, as the population was well below the prescribed level of 2.76 lakh per constituency. On January 9 last, he announced in Tuticorin that there would be no change in the number of constituencies.
Addressing reporters here, after holding discussions with the Collector, Sunil Paliwal, on the delimitation exercise to carried out in the district, Mr. Palanisamy said the population of the district was only 27.23 lakhs due to migration to Chennai and other places for employment. Hence, it would have to lose a constituency.
However, Virudhunagar, neighbouring district, would be getting one more constituency.
