Taluk literary meet begins today

By Our Staff Correspondent

PUNAROOR, FEB. 2. The Mangalore Taluk Kannada Sahitya Sammelan will open on Tuesday at Punaroor in Mulky hobli of Mangalore taluk. Punaroor is close to the temple town of Kateel.

Although the town wears a festive look, the people of this town are bitter over the insult meted out to the President of the Kannada Sahitya Parishat, Harikrishna Punaroor, in Bangalore recently. The issue is sure to surface during the deliberations at the sammelan and resolutions condemning the incident are likely to be passed.

However, K. Bhuvanabhirama Udupa, secretary of Dakshina Kannada District Kannada Sahitya Parishat, says the Mangalore taluk unit of the parishat has condemned the incident. The organising committee has introduced Hasya Sahitya Gosthi as part of the sammelan. The session will be chaired by the veteran writer, C. Hosabettu. There will be four themes — literature by R. Narasimhamurthy, print media by Nityananda Padre, folklore by Ganesh Ameen Sankamar, and Yakshagana by Srinivasa Bhat Kateel.

The Kavi Gosthi will be chaired by Na. Da. Shetty, columnist and writer, and participants will include Harish Kera, Suresh Negalaguli, Bha. Ba. Majibailu, Kanandagulu Govinda Bhatta, Shakuntala Bhat, Ranjani Suresh, Josie Pinto, Ganesh Prasad Pandelu, Hariprasad Shetty, Ramesh Chiplunkar, Harish Mundkur, Meenakshi Ramachandra, and Malathi Pai. The session on mass media and Kannada will be chaired by the veteran journalist, A. Eshwariah. The radio section will be dealt with by Vasanth Kumar Perla, television by G.N. Mohan, and regional language by Kadri Navneeth Shetty.

Nine achievers in different fields will be honoured. The sammelan will be inaugurated by the Harikatha Kalakshepa artiste, Santh Bhadragiri Achutadas, who will render a Harikatha episode later in the evening.
