Doctors accused of negligence

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, FEB. 2. The death of a road accident victim, M. Sudarshan (35), who succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment at Osmania General Hospital, sparked off controversy with his relatives accusing the doctors of negligence on Monday. Responding to the allegations made by the patient's family members, the OGH Superintendent, Malleswara Rao, ordered an inquiry into the incident.

A labourer of Nagarkurnool in Mahbubnagar district, Sudarshan, sustained serious head injuries after a speeding jeep hit him while he was going on a bicycle at Nagarkurnool this morning. On the local doctors' advise, Sudarshan's relatives shifted him to OGH by 12.30 p.m. "Till 1.30 p.m. not a single doctor attended on my husband," Sudarshan's wife, Yellamma, charged. Around 1.30 p.m., the patient was shifted to the Emergency Operation Theatre. The neurosurgeon, Vidyasagar, declared Sudarshan dead after examining him at the operation theatre.

Sudarshan's nephew, Ramulu and other attendants, Rajashekhar and Shekhar Reddy, alleged that it was sheer negligence on the part of the doctors that led to Sudarshan's death. "What hurt us more was the attempts of the hospital staff to mislead us by trying to inject saline to Sudarshan who was already dead. This was nothing but cheating," they charged. Condemning the charge, the OGH Superintendent said the doctors tried their best to save Sudarshan's life. "He was brought here six hours after the accident occurred. And the precious time was lost in transportation," he remarked.
