dated February 4, 1954: Tragedy mars Kumbh Mela

Nearly 200 persons were feared to have been killed and 1,000 injured in one of the worst stampedes in Kumbh Nagar in Allahabad on the main bathing day on February 3. The stampede was caused when a procession of Naga sadhus was passing below the bund in the forenoon. When the police cleared the area of pilgrims, the extent of the tragedy became evident. About 200 square yards of the sandy bank of the Ganga were strewn with bodies of the dead and injured. The Sangam, the holy confluence of the Ganga, Jamuna and mythical Saraswathi, drew the biggest ever congregation on the Mauni Amavasya day.
