Kanika upsets Shruti

By Our Sports Reporter

BANGALORE, FEB. 3. Kanika Minocha toppled top ranked Shruti Khanna on the opening day of the four-day All India ladies amateur golf championship (matchplay) tournament, which commenced at the Karnataka Golf Association on Tuesday.

Shruthi, currently the No. 1 in the amateur Order of Merit list, had one horrible hole on the 16th to lose all chances of winning. The 16th seeded Kanika played steadily to log par scores on the last two holes, while Shruthi bogeyed both to lose by two holes on the 18th.

In another major upset in the gold division, Rani Sonti of Karnataka Golf Association upset fourth-seeded Pragya Mishra of Kolkatta. Rani focussed strongly on her game and by hitting the greens with regularity won by three holes on the 17th.

The easiest winner of the day was last year's semifinalist Shalini Malik who ran circles around youngster Vaishavi Sinha. Shruti was leading by eight holes after the 11th and played too well for Vaishavi.

The silver division witnessed a thriller in the match between Saanya Sharma and Revathy Solomon. The former won in a tie-breaker after the scores were all square on the 18th.
