Court notice to Karnataka

PUNE, FEB. 3. A special court today served notice on the Karnataka Government on an application by Maharashtra's Special Investigation Team (SIT), seeking custody of the stamp scam kingpin, Abdul Karim Telgi, now lodged in a Bangalore jail.

Raja Thackeray, Public Prosecutor, said the Maharashtra Government had written to the Karnataka Additional Chief Secretary, seeking Telgi's custody for interrogation and subsequent trial.

Telgi is in the custody of the Karnataka Police and is restrained from being shifted to any other State. The application seeks to revoke the order and facilitate his transfer here, Mr. Thackeray said.

When pointed out that Maharashtra had been trying to get Telgi here for a long time, Mr. Thackeray admitted that there was delay in getting him. Telgi's custody was required for pre-trial formalities. ``If all goes well, we should like to start the trial in a few weeks.'' — UNI
