Plea for CBI probe against godman turned down

By Our Legal Correspondent

NEW DELHI, FEB. 3. The Supreme Court today dismissed at the admission stage (in limine) a special leave petition seeking a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation into the religious activities and alleged accumulation of assets of over Rs. 300 crores by godman `Kalki Bhagvan' alias V. Vijayakumar.

A Bench comprising Justice Ruma Pal and Justice P. Venkatarama Reddi dismissed the petition by Vishwanath Swami, social activist, challenging a Madras High Court judgment rejecting his plea for a probe into the godman's activities after hearing counsel Prashant Bhushan.

The petitioner submitted that Mr. Vijayakumar floated 13 religious and rural service trusts and started collecting funds and donations.

He alleged that the entire money had been given to the Bhagvan's son and other family members.

The petitioner said he had sent several written representations to the Income Tax Department, the CBI and the Tamil Nadu Police, but no action was taken.
