Safety measures

Sir, — The Srirangam fire accident has encouraged the authorities to ensure safety measures in marriage halls. They should look into safety norms in big shops also, which deal with inflammable goods like clothes.

Some shops in the main bazaar area have expanded their shops in length, width and height but only one door is used for entry and exit.

Officials should insist on putting up more exit doors. Fire extinguishers should be installed. Staircases should be conveniently built for quick evacuation of customers in case of any emergency.

Rash driving

Sir, — Of late, two-wheelers moving at breakneck speed and with blinding headlights are a big threat to pedestrians, who have to cross roads from one side to another on main thoroughfares in Tiruchi.

Police officials should check this menace. Pedestrians have as much right as motorists to use the road.

S.Ranganathan,

Train service

Sir, — I endorse the views of G. Kanakasabai, published in this column last week regarding the halting of Pallavan Express at Lalgudi. It has a few problems.

The distance between the earlier halt of Srirangam and Lalgudi is 13 km. Originally the train had only two halts — one at Srirangam and another at Villupuam between Tiruchi and Mambalam. Subsequently, three more halts at Vriddhachalam, Ariyalur and Chengalpattu have been added.

Now, there is a request for another halt at Lalgudi. The train runs to its full capacity. One or two more coaches are added almost on all days. Still, the number of passengers who travel in this train exceeds its capacity.

In these circumstances, there is a need to run another train between Tiruchi and Chennai leaving Tiruchi at 7-30 hours and reaching Egmore at 13-30 hours. This train can have the existing halts plus halts at Lalgudi, Tindivanam, Madurantakam and Tambaram.

The Pallavan Express can be restored to its original status with two halts at Srirangam and Villupuram. The pairing train can leave Egmore in the morning hours and reach Tiruchi in the afternoon.

Will the railway authorities do something in this direction?

S.Krishnakumar,

Sir, — Since there is no direct train service between Karur and Thanjavur, I request the Southern Railway authorities to extend the Karur-Tiruchi Passenger trains (number 883, 879) up to Thanjavur and the Thanjavur-Tiruchi Passenger trains (no. 895, 717) up to Karur.

Otherwise, there is no need for gauge conversion of Thanjavur-Kumbakonam, Thanjavur-Nagoor sections.

I also request them to add more compartments in the Tiruchi-Palghat Fast Passenger.

R.Palanisamy,

Karur.

Land acquisition

Sir, — It is unfortunate that a controversy has erupted at the recent corporation council meeting over efforts to acquire railway land for expansion of the Central bus stand.

Residents are well aware of the importance of acquiring the land. But some councillors are objecting to the project for their narrow political gain.

They are also adopting double standards by opposing the intensive drive to collect taxes even while demanding more development works. How can such works be taken up without funds?

We urge the councillors not to show any leniency towards tax defaulters.

M. Sekaran,

secretary, Tamil Nadu Consumer Federation, Tiruchi.

Bad roads

Sir, — Lalgudi is an important town and happens to be the centre of bus route to Dalmiapuram Ariyalur and Jeyamkondam from Tiruchi. The roads between Samayapuram Tollgate and Lalgudi are in a very bad condition.

In view of heavy traffic on the road between Tiruchi and Ariyalur, the highway authorities should relay or repair the roads to ensure safe journey.

A.Francis,

Tiruchi.

Sir, — Near the Central bus stand, a road was laid using waste plastic materials. The district administration has not commented on the quality of the road but the public feel that this stretch is better than other roads.

Most of the roads in the State are ill equipped to handle the heavy flow of traffic and accidents on these potholed roads are quite common.

The Government refuses to use plastic materials for laying roads, and prefers the combination of tar and bitumen leading to potholes and increased expenditure on repair of such bad roads.

The Government should come out with a GO to convert all roads into plastic roads.

Like rainwater harvesting scheme, laying of plastic roads should be made compulsory.

H.Ghouse Baig,

Tiruchi.
