SHIMOGA, FEB. 3. Shimoga district will feel the absence of M.D. Nanjundaswamy, President of the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha (KRRS), who died in Bangalore on Tuesday. For, he gave a new meaning to the farmers' movement by bringing in an element of militancy into it. Prof. Nanjundaswamy's attachment to the district was such that it had almost become a second home for him. It was also the nucleus for the KRRS since it came into being in 1980 as an off shoot of the violent farmers' revolt at Nargund in Dharwad district which saw the death of two farmers in police firing. It was under the dynamic leadership of Prof. Nanjundaswamy that the subdued sugarcane growers' association took a definite shape to become a State-level farmers' organisation under the banner of KRRS committing itself to the cause of farmers. Prof. Nanjundaswamy's association with Shimoga will be remembered for long for the reason that his bold and inspiring leadership kindled a new hope in farmers in the district.
