Letters to the Editor
Sir, This refers to your editorial, "The headscarf controversy" (Feb. 3). The action taken by the French Government is correct as far as religious manifestations in public schools or places are concerned. When people settle in a foreign country, they should follow its rules. Their religious practices should remain private.
A.N. Kandasamy,
* * * Sir, Religion is a private matter to be practised within the confines of one's home or religious place. Curtailing "ostensive" religious symbols in public schools does not amount to interfering with personal beliefs.
R. Ramakrishnan,
* * * Sir, The proposed ban is in tune with the secular values of France. But as rightly pointed out in your editorial, it should not result in the alienation of certain sections. Taking into account the sentiments of all concerned, it would be better if the Government approved of a uniform scarf or turban that could be worn by those concerned.
Anirudh Govind Rajan,
Chennai
