KOZHIKODE, FEB. 3. Several multi-national companies (MNCs), Indian companies and blue chip firms have offered jobs to all the 59 final-year students of the two-year Post Graduate Programme (PGP) in Management at the Indian Institute of Management, Kozhikode (IIM-K), even as a week remains for the completion of the placement programme. Forty to 45 companies, including MNCs and blue chip companies participated in the placement process in the IIM-K to hunt for "future managers''. More than 40 students got lateral placements (higher than entry-level). This is the sixth batch of the IIM-K, which started its PGP in Management course in 1997. Though the number of companies that participated in the placement programme is lesser than last year, the number of offers has gone up. A total of 52 companies offered 78 placements to the graduating batch of 65 students when the final placements concluded last year. This year, about 45 companies have made about 100 offers. All the students have got at least two offers. "More companies, all of them Indian, are due to pitch in for holding their placement process on the IIM-K campus in the coming days, the IIM-K placement chairperson," Ernesto Noronha told The Hindu here today. Computer Science Corporation (CSC), Indore, a MNC, has offered Rs. 10.5 lakhs to a student of the IIM-K this year. This is the highest offer made by a company to a student of the IIM-K in the placement process held so far this year. It was Narendra Wadhwani of Mumbai who got the offer of project manager in the MNC, which has branches in the U.S. He has work experience in the IT field and the post of project manager is a lateral-level placement (higher than entry-level). The second highest offer was also made by CSC, which offered Rs. 9.5 lakhs to Jayant Dwaraknath, who also has work experience. He has also been offered the post of project manager. This year, the highest pre-placement offer (PPO) of Rs. 8 lakhs was offered by GE Capital, an MNC, to Gurwinder Singh Lamba. Mr. Lamba has confirmed the offer, according to sources. "As per preliminary calculations, the average salary offered this year would be definitely higher than the previous year. Last year, the average value of accepted offers was approximately Rs. 5.46 lakhs. However, a correct picture would emerge only in a week's time," explained Dr. Ernesto. Among the 59 students, three were women and two of them got more than one offer. Like last year, the major recruiters were IT companies. Moreover, most of the students this year had experience in the IT sector. The three companies with the highest number of offers were IT companies Infosys (14 offers), Wipro Infotech (12) and Digital Global Soft (eight). There were newcomers among the IT companies, such as Infosys, IBM India, Covansys and Digital Global Soft. The other companies that were new to the campus were BASS (German company), Morgan Stanley, CRISIL, and Henkel Spic. Kotak Mahindra, UTI Bank, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Wipro Infotech, and Bharati Telecom, had participated in the placement process last year too. Some of the companies have insisted on immediate confirmation from the students. It is learnt that some of the students have confirmed the offers. "They would not be able to participate in the placement process of the Indian companies that would be coming to the campus soon. Those students who have not yet confirmed the offers received, will confirm on or before February 15,''Dr. Ernesto said. The TCS personnel from Thiruvananthapuram had come for recruitment along with their counterparts from Mumbai, Chennai and other places in the country. A team of interviewers from MetLife had come from Kochi.
