MAMC gangrape accused asked to give witnesses' list

NEW DELHI, FEB 3. A city court today asked Rahul -- prime accused in the Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC) student gangrape case -- and co-accused Amit to submit by February 5 the list of witnesses they wanted to produce in support of their defence.

Additional Sessions Judge Chandra Sekhar directed Rahul and Amit to give him a list of all the witnesses they wanted to produce before the court.

During their statements before the court on January 13, the accused had said that they do not want to produce any defence witness. However, in an application moved before the court on January 24, the duo said they changed their mind after consulting their lawyers and prayed that they be granted permission to produce defence witnesses.

Rahul had denied allegations against him saying he was implicated by the police and that the matter should be heard by a juvenile court since he was a minor.

A week after the incident, prime accused Rahul was arrested by police on November 22, 2002. The fourth-year student of MAMC was allegedly raped by three youth at knife-point on the terrace of the ``Khooni Darwaza'' monument on the busy Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg. After being told by the victim, her father had informed the Investigation Officer that the rapist had a tattoo on his right arm marked `Rahul' which helped in the arrest of the main accused.

On September 6, 2003, a Juvenile Court here had ordered two boys aged 13 and 14 years, who pleaded guilty before it about their role in the incident, to be sent to Special Home till they attain majority. -- PTI
