Warning against medicines' use
Speaking at the conference, organised in four metros over this past weekend, the Head of Paediatrics Department of All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Meherban Singh, said, "Fever is the commonest symptom or signal of disease in children. There is no need to panic, because fever is a protective response on the part of the body to fight an infection. Most fevers occur due to a self-limiting viral infection and they resolve spontaneously". Dr. Singh cautioned particularly against use of medicine that may harm the children. He said even medicines such as ibuprofen and aspirin should not be given to children without a doctor prescribing them. The joint deputy chairman of the General Practitioners Committee of the British Medical Association, Simon Fradd, also expressed concern at over-the-counter sale of scheduled drugs in India and lack of proper knowledge about their possible side effects.
