Warning against medicines' use

NEW DELHI FEB.3. Warning that powerful medicines may not necessarily be safe, experts participating in a conference on "Emerging Practices in Antipyretic therapy'' here said it is always sensible to be all the more judicious when using such medicines in children.

Speaking at the conference, organised in four metros over this past weekend, the Head of Paediatrics Department of All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Meherban Singh, said, "Fever is the commonest symptom or signal of disease in children. There is no need to panic, because fever is a protective response on the part of the body to fight an infection. Most fevers occur due to a self-limiting viral infection and they resolve spontaneously".

Dr. Singh cautioned particularly against use of medicine that may harm the children. He said even medicines such as ibuprofen and aspirin should not be given to children without a doctor prescribing them.

The joint deputy chairman of the General Practitioners Committee of the British Medical Association, Simon Fradd, also expressed concern at over-the-counter sale of scheduled drugs in India and lack of proper knowledge about their possible side effects.

Self-defence demonstration


NEW DELHI FEB. 3. A skill demonstration ceremony as part of a self-defence training workshop was organised at Lady Shri Ram College premises here today. Over 80 students who underwent the two-week-long training demonstrated their skills and technique. Designed and conducted by the Delhi Police, Crime Against Women Cell, the basic idea behind the workshop was to empower women and teach them to defend themselves.

Convocation held

NEW DELHI FEB. 3. The Birla Institute of Management and Technology organised Convocation 2004 over this past weekend in which 300 students were awarded their postgraduate diploma in insurance and risk management.

Addressing the gathering of students, faculty and guests of the institute, former Union Finance Minister, P. Chidambaram, said that the "feel-good'' factor alone cannot drive growth. "There is a lot of positive trends in the economy, but the few negatives cannot be wished away. India may be shinning for upper or middle class of society, but it is not shinning for the most vulnerable sections of society,'' he said.

Neruda's birth centenary celebrations

NEW DELHI FEB. 3. Literary and cultural personalities of the Art Faculty of Delhi University will be celebrating the birth centenary of renowned poet and Nobel Laureate from Chile, Pablo Neruda, here tomorrow.

To celebrate the occasion, the Department of Germanic and Romance Studies of DU has decided to name its library after the poet while the Embassy of Chile in Delhi is also actively participating in the celebration.

Poet and recipient of the Pablo Neruda Award and national award for literature of Chile, Raul Zutita, would unveil the plaque while the student dean of DU, Hema Raghavan, will preside over the function.

Scholar Awards presented

NEW DELHI FEB.3. The "IACM Scholar Awards 2003" were presented to three winners at a function organised by the IACM Education Institute at Dalton Hall at Lodhi Road here.

The Delhi Education, Tourism, Art and Culture Minister, Arvinder Singh Lovely, presented the certificates and prize money to Ashok Kumar of Kirori Mal College, while Abhishek Mishra of Shivaji College and Shangrila Dangayach of Hindu College bagged the second and third prizes.

Over 6,700 students from 27 colleges of Delhi had participated in the event.

At the function, Mr. Lovely said: "Networking is playing a dominant role in today's globalising world and IACM, based on its expertise in Hardware and Networking, has earned a reputation for providing quality and excellence in teaching.''
