PONDICHERRY, FEB. 3. The Senior Superintendent of Police (Law and Order), Sunil Garg, told newsmen here today that a forensic science laboratory would be set up soon. The proposal was being pursued in collaboration with the Hyderabad-based Central Forensic Science Laboratory. As part of the Police department modernisation, there was a proposal to set up an automatic fingerprint bureau. Stating that the department was computerising details relating to registration of cases and investigation, Mr. Sunil Garg said one more information kiosk with touch screen facility would be set up on the Beach Road here.
National award
The department had bagged the Special Commendation Award under the Golden Peacock National Award scheme. The award was presented at a function in Bangalore on January 24 in recognition of innovative policing and application of technology in investigation. A panel of judges headed by the former Chief Justice of India, Justice A.M. Ahmadi, selected the department for the award.
3 juvenile offenders held
Mr. Sunil Garg said intensive patrolling by the north, south and rural wings led to nabbing of three juvenile offenders. A team first arrested a 17-year-old boy hailing from Sellanchery of Tamil Nadu. During interrogation, the boy confessed to having stolen three motorcycles in the Mudaliarpet block. The police recovered all the three vehicles. After breaking the locks, he would lift the vehicles and change the number plates. On his information, two of his associates hailing from the Shakthinagar and Lawspet blocks were arrested yesterday. Mr. Garg said the two were involved in burglaries in business establishments in the Mudaliarpet, D. Nagar, Mettupalayam, Thavalakuppam and Odiansalai areas. The Superintendent of Police (North), Firoze Zia Hussain, said all the property stolen by them had been recovered. The three were admitted to the Observation Home for judicial custody pending investigation.
