Terrorist-police nexus surfaces again in J&K

By Luv Puri

JAMMU, FEB. 3. A Jammu and Kashmir police clerk, who is alleged to have tipped off terrorists about the operation by the security forces in the State, is facing a probe.

Police sources told The Hindu that Abdul Rashid, working as a munshi (clerk) at the Billawar police station in Kathua district of the Jammu region, has been interrogated on his alleged links with terrorists. Rashid is suspected to have tipped off terrorists about police operations. Some time ago, police forces had tried to intercept a group of Hizb-ul Mujahideen terrorists in the hilly Billawar area, but they managed to escape. Many operations by police in the Billawar forests earlier had also failed.

In one of the operations, a relative of Rashid was found near the encounter site. On being interrogated, it was revealed that both had links with the terrorists. Police officials ordered an inquiry into the incident. Rashid, attached to the District Police Lines, Kathua, was interrogated.

Speaking to The Hindu , the Kathua SSP, Raghubir Singh, said, "The law will take its course and we are investigating the mater at this stage. Nobody will be spared if they are found to be involved."

A year ago, police had arrested a personal security officer (PSO) of a Member of the Legislator Council (MLC) involved in a series of blasts in Rajouri town. The PSO would throw grenades into crowded bazaars and run away.

Similarly, it came to light recently that two policemen provided logistic support to the terrorists who were involved in the assassination of the former State Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister, Mushtaq Lone, on September 11, 2002.
